What's In My Bag

I'm often asked what kind of gear I use for my photography, so I thought I would take this opportunity to share with you the prime equipment that I use and what I use each for.

For the most part, I use Canon gear as much as possible. I feel the quality of Canon for photography is unsurpassed and you can tell in the feel of the equipment and the quality of the pictures that result. That said, there are some areas I did branch away based off of need and a LOT of comparison research.

Canon 6D Mark II

My primary camera body is a Canon 6D Mark II, which is a full frame camera providing versatility and quality for all photos, including those taken in lower light situations.

I do also have a Canon 6D as a secondary camera body, which I tend to use in conjunction with my primary camera in events for which I don't want to keep switching our my lenses. I will mount my primary lens on my 6D Mark II and then an alternate lens on my 6D. This helps me keep up with the motion of the event and lessen the opportunity for missed shots.

Canon 50mm f/1.4

This is a nice, fixed focal length and wide aperture lens which produces great quality photos with a really nice bokeh (background blur). I use this lens for portraits and close up photography shots. I tend to use this lens for more creative shots as well just because it is smaller, lightweight and provides great photo quality.

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM

This is a my Ultra-Wide Angle lens that I use a lot for landscapes, real estate and large group photos. This is a nice lens that I often use with a circular polarizing filter to help capture the clouds better and lose reflections in water, windows, etc. This is a nice lens and kind of fun to use.

Canon 70-200 f/4 L

I love this zoom lens, it is light and very high quality.  With the f/4 maximum width aperture, it does struggle a little in lower light situations, but I can generally offset that fine by bumping up the ISO or slow down the shutter speed a little more to let more light in. I have used this lens for portraits, but tend to use it more for nature and sports/band photos.

Meike 85mm f/1.8

This lens is not my favorite, it was actually my first prime lens, Where it does take nice, high quality photos, with a nice bokeh when the aperture is wide open to 1.8, the autofocus is very loud. Due to this, I often use the manual focus more with this lens. I generally only use this lens for portrait photography.

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8

This is one of my favorite lenses and is my primary use lens - I tend to keep this one on my camera most of the time. I use this for portraits, nature, pets, events, etc. This is a zoom lens that will go down to a nice 28mm for more wide angle photos, and 75mm for something more close up. The wide aperture of 2.8 allows for nice light, high quality and nice bokeh as well.

Tamron 150-600 f/5-6.3

This was my first telephoto lens, and is a very nice lens for sports, marching band, nature and space photography. The downside of this lens is that it is very heavy and I very rarely use it without a tripod due to the weight. This lens captures very nice photos, in fact I used this one to capture the shots of the moon and Flying bird landing on the bird feeder in my portfolio.

Neewer Speedlight

I have a couple of these speedlights to help add light to my photos, mainly for portrait photos. Generally speaking I rarely use a flash because of the nature of the photos I am taking, however when I am in a darker situation or in a situation where I want to add dramatic lighting features to the photo, I will pull these out and use together with an umbrella or octagon flash diffuser. I do also carry a smaller, mobile diffuser for event situations for which I want to use lighting, but don't have the ability to carry around the tripod and larger diffusers.

Neewer is one of my favorite 3rd party brands for photo accessories - they are affordable and very good quality.

Neewer Speedlight Trigger

I use these speedlight triggers because the vast majority of the time, if I am using flash, I am using it off the camera. These triggers make for easy functionality and ability to place anywhere for remote flash operations. These also provide the ability to use multiple speedlights for more dramatic lighting in my portraits.

Neewer Tripod Gimbal Head

This gimbal head was a nice addition to my collection. This replaces the head on the tripod and makes for much easier maneuverability of the camera (rotation and tilt) for many situations in event photography and nature photography in which I need to use a tripod. This accessory is a lifesaver for heavier lenses, such as my Tamron 150-600 and Canon 70-200 lenses. The downside to this gimbal head is that it is bulky and it is somewhat heavy, so not so nice to carry long distances or to for air travel.

Pro/Master XC525 Tripod/Monopod

This is a great lightweight tripod, which also has the ability to convert one of the legs into a monopod if I don' want to carry the entire thing with me to an event. This tripod extends to a perfect height and has the ability to extend the legs our a bit wider than standard, which helps when I want to get a little lower, but also for holding a little extra weight. This is easy to use, folds up small and attaches perfectly to my camera bag for easy transit. I love this - it is less than 1/2 the weight of my old tripod, and much more versatile.
